It’s surprisingly hard to find cool local events happening nearby. You’re stuck scrolling through boring lists with barely any photos or helpful reviews. A lot of smaller, hyper-local events get missed completely. On the flip side, local event organizers and small businesses also struggle to stand out, often getting buried under bigger promotions or not reaching the right audience at all. In smaller towns or quieter neighborhoods, there’s a real lack of visibility and access to fun, engaging activities, leaving both hosts and potential attendees disconnected. People want an easier, more visual way to discover what’s actually going on around them, something that feels real, fun, and up-to-date.
Finding fun local events is frustrating—most lists are dull, miss smaller happenings, and leave people disconnected from what’s really going on. At the same time, small businesses and event organizers struggle for visibility, making it hard for both hosts and attendees to connect in a fun, visual, and up-to-date way.
How do people currently discover hyper-local events, and what challenges do they face in the process?
Social media is the top source, with about 66% of U.S. adults using it to find local events. Facebook leads at 53%, then Instagram at 27%
Word of mouth remains strong, 59% of adults learn about events through friends, family, or coworkers
Specialized apps and sites (Eventbrite, Meetup, TicketMaster, Google Events)
Local news and community channels (newspapers, town websites, bulletins) still play a key role. Around 42% in small towns rely on newspapers for event info.

In analyzing user research, I created a survey to learn how people find local events, what they look for, and what problems they run into.
"Many events are not well-advertised, and sometimes ticket links are hard to find. I missed an art exhibition because the time listed online was incorrect."
"I’d love to have everything in one place instead of checking different platforms. I hate scrolling through events that don’t match my interests or location."
"I LOVE exploring local events and activities, I personally don’t like going on a tour with a travel company, almost all of my trips are self planned."

Smaller pop-ups and local events often get overlooked
Needs & Goals
A curated, personalized feed of events based on interests
Real-time, accurate updates to stay informed
One easy-to-use app that shows both big festivals and hidden local gems
Based on user research and key pain points, I mapped out a clear information architecture to guide a simpler, more engaging way to discover local events.

Throughout the process…
I have grown both as a designer and as a problem solver. I learned how to create visually engaging designs that also prioritize user convenience and clarity. Working on this project was a valuable experience that taught me the importance of balancing creativity with functionality.
If I had more time…
I would develop an AR feature that lets users virtually explore event venues and layouts before attending. This would give attendees a better sense of the space and atmosphere, helping them plan their visit and get excited about the experience.
